Specialist Cardiology Consultation

Consultant-led assessment with a clear pathway to further investigation and treatment where required.

It involves understanding the patient’s symptoms, medical history and cardiovascular risk before deciding whether further investigation or treatment is required.

Patients at The Heart Clinic are assessed within a specialist cardiology service under the direction of Dr Patrick Owens, Consultant Cardiologist

Patients may be referred with:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Breathlessness
  • Palpitations
  • Irregular, unusually fast or slow heartbeat
  • Dizziness or unexplained fainting
  • High blood pressure
  • Abnormal ECG or other test results
  • Concerns regarding cardiovascular risk

Consultation and Testing

Where appropriate, cardiac testing can be carried out locally at The Heart Clinic.

This may include:

  • ECG
  • Echocardiography
  • Cardiac rhythm monitoring
  • 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
  • Exercise treadmill testing

Results are considered alongside symptoms, medical history and clinical examination.

When Further Investigation Is Required

Some patients require more advanced cardiac imaging.

Through established diagnostic links, patients can access CT coronary angiography at Mater Private Cork, Beacon Hospital and Blackrock Clinic, and specialist cardiac MRI at Blackrock Clinic where clinically indicated.

When Treatment Is Required

Patients requiring invasive coronary investigation or intervention can progress through an established pathway in collaboration with UPMC Whitfield Hospital.

Where cardiac surgery is required, onward referral can be made to specialist cardiothoracic surgical teams in Dublin.
